Meet Lana Mathieson

Artist, illustrator and fashion designer – inspired by animals, beautiful places and Scotland.

Hi, I’m Lana.
The Artist

Hi, I’m Lana.

Art has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’ve been drawing since I was a little girl, and what began as a childhood passion eventually became my profession. I studied Fashion Design and Illustration in Hamburg, graduating with a Diploma in Fashion Design, and today I look back on more than 30 years of experience in art, design and illustration. Born in Riga, my life has taken me through many different places and cultures – including Germany, Italy, India and Scotland. Each of them has influenced the way I see, draw and create.

SCOTTLAND

Scotland in my heart.

For more than ten years, I called Lanark, Scotland my home. It was here that I truly grew into the artist I am today. Scotland inspired me, helped me find my own creative voice and gave me the freedom to develop my style. The country welcomed me, and its landscapes, wildlife, history and people have held a special place in my heart ever since. I return regularly to reconnect – and almost always come home with new ideas, characters and stories waiting to be drawn.

MY STYLE

Animals, fashion & a little personality.

Animals have always had a very special place in my heart – and naturally became the stars of many of my illustrations. Highland cows, sheep, dogs, cats and Scottish wildlife appear throughout my collections. But my animals rarely remain simply animals. They wear tartans, hats, scarves, coats, shoes and boots. Perhaps it’s the fashion designer in me that never really disappeared. This playful combination of animals, fashion and Scottish character has become my signature style – and makes many of my illustrations instantly recognisable. Animals are also a big part of my life at home. I grew up with dogs and today share my home with a dog and a cat. And yes – my beautiful Dobermann has already found his way into my artwork too.

Art made to be lived with.
MY PHILOSOPHY

Art made to be lived with.

I’ve always believed that art shouldn’t only live on gallery walls. I want my illustrations to travel, become part of people’s homes and everyday lives – to be seen, enjoyed and loved. That’s why I bring my artwork onto carefully selected, high-quality products. Today, my designs are sold in more than 70 gift, tourist and souvenir shops, with a particularly strong following across Scotland. My idea remains beautifully simple: to capture the places and animals I love, add a little fashion and personality – and create art that makes people smile. — Lana
